City skyline and waterfront promenade busy with visitors on a bright day

Easy International Getaways for Indian Travellers

The hardest international trip is always the first one. Not because it is difficult, but because everything is unfamiliar at once: the paperwork, the airport, the currency, the question of whether you have packed the right things. The good news is that a first trip abroad from South India does not have to be ambitious. A short flight, a country that is used to Indian visitors, and a week that does not try to cover three cities is almost always the right start.

Please note: visa rules change often, and requirements differ by passport, purpose and length of stay. Nothing below should be treated as current visa guidance — confirm current requirements with our team before booking.

Short-haul favourites from South India

These are the destinations we send first-time international travellers to most often. All of them are reachable with a reasonably short flight from Chennai, Coimbatore or Bengaluru, all are comfortable for vegetarian travellers, and none of them need a complicated itinerary to be worth the trip.

1. Sri Lanka

The shortest hop abroad and the gentlest introduction. Colombo, the hill country around Kandy and Nuwara Eliya, and the beaches in the south make a complete week, and the train ride through the tea estates is one of the most enjoyable journeys anywhere in the region. Food, climate and pace all feel familiar enough that nothing about the trip is a shock.

2. Thailand

Probably the best value of any international trip from India. Bangkok is busy, cheap and endlessly interesting; Phuket and Krabi handle the beach half; Chiang Mai in the north is calm and green. Families, couples and groups of friends all find a version of Thailand that suits them, which is why so many travellers go back a second time.

3. Malaysia

Underrated and very easy. Kuala Lumpur is modern, walkable around the centre and well connected, with Langkawi a short flight away for the beach part. It is particularly comfortable for Indian families — vegetarian food is easy to find and Tamil is widely spoken, which takes a surprising amount of stress out of a first trip.

4. United Arab Emirates

Dubai and Abu Dhabi are built for short holidays. Everything works, distances are manageable, and a four- or five-day trip genuinely feels complete: a desert evening, a day at the top of a tower, a temple or mosque visit, and as much shopping as the group can stand. It is also the easiest destination on this list for travellers who are nervous about food.

5. Singapore

Compact, spotless and very simple to navigate, which makes it excellent with children or elderly parents. Three or four days covers the city comfortably, and it pairs naturally with Malaysia if you have a longer window. Costs are higher than elsewhere on this list, but nothing about the trip is complicated.

6. Vietnam

The destination our travellers have started asking about most. Ha Long Bay, the old town at Hoi An and the pace of Hanoi are the highlights. The country is long, so pick either the north or the centre for a first visit rather than trying to travel its whole length in a week.

7. Bali, Indonesia

Green, scenic and relaxed, and a favourite with couples in particular. Ubud inland and one coastal base is the standard split. The flight is longer than the others here, so allow at least six nights for it to be worth the journey.

8. Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan

The two newer entries on our list for travellers who want somewhere less familiar. Baku is dramatic and walkable, with mountains and mud volcanoes within a day trip, and Uzbekistan’s Silk Route cities are genuinely spectacular. Both suit travellers who have already done Southeast Asia and want a change of scenery.

Planning your first trip abroad

Start with the passport. Check the validity well before you book — many countries expect a comfortable margin beyond your travel dates, and renewals take time. If anyone in the group does not have a passport yet, that step decides your earliest possible travel date.

Leave the visa timeline to us. Requirements differ by country and change without much notice. Tell us where and when you want to go and we will confirm what applies at that time, well before any non-refundable booking.

Pick one country, or two at most. A first trip that covers two countries in seven days is mostly a trip about airports. One country, two bases, is the formula that works.

Book the return leg sensibly. A late-night return followed by a working morning is a bad ending to a good holiday. Keep a buffer day at home if you can.

Sort money and connectivity before you land. Carry a mix of card and local currency, inform your bank that you are travelling, and arrange an international plan or a local SIM so that you are not searching for wifi on arrival.

Keep copies of everything. Passport, tickets, hotel confirmations and insurance, stored offline on your phone and printed once. It takes ten minutes and occasionally saves a day.

Do not skip travel insurance. For a first international trip especially, medical cover and baggage cover are worth far more than the small amount they add to the total.

Best time to travel

For Southeast Asia — Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Bali — the drier stretch from November to March is the most dependable, and it also lines up with the pleasant season in the UAE, where the summer is genuinely too hot for sightseeing. Sri Lanka has two monsoons affecting different coasts at different times, so the right months depend on which part of the island you are visiting. Baku and Uzbekistan are best in spring and autumn.

How long to plan

Four to five days is enough for the UAE or Singapore. Six to eight suits Sri Lanka, Thailand, Malaysia and Vietnam. Bali and the Central Asian routes deserve seven to ten days. As a rule, if the flight is longer than five hours, give the trip at least six nights.

Tell us who is travelling and what your dates look like, and we will confirm the current requirements and build the itinerary around them — send us an enquiry or browse our featured destinations for more ideas.
