Best Weekend Getaways from Salem
One of the quiet advantages of living in Salem is how much sits within a few hours’ drive. Hills in three directions, waterfalls, wildlife, a palace city and a coffee country — none of it needs a flight, a week of leave or months of planning. These are the short breaks we arrange most often for families and groups of friends who decide on a Thursday that they would like to be somewhere else by Saturday.
Right on the doorstep
Two destinations here are close enough that you can leave after breakfast and still have most of the day when you arrive. They are the easiest to organise and the ones to choose when the weekend is genuinely short.
1. Yercaud
The obvious answer, and still a good one. The climb up the twenty hairpin bends takes barely an hour, and the temperature drops noticeably by the time you reach the top. The lake, the viewpoints at Pagoda Point and Lady’s Seat, the orange and coffee estates and a slow walk around Emerald Lake make a complete, unhurried day. Yercaud is at its best midweek or early on a Saturday; by Sunday afternoon in season the lake road gets busy. If you want a proper break rather than a day out, stay one night — the early morning, before the day visitors arrive, is the best part of the hill.
2. Hogenakkal
Closer still, and completely different in character. The Kaveri spreads out and drops through a gorge here, and the coracle ride below the falls is the whole point of the visit. Water levels change through the year, so the falls are dramatic after the monsoon and much gentler in summer. Go early in the day, agree the coracle charge before you get in, and treat it as a half-day trip rather than a weekend.
Two to four hours away
These take a morning to reach, which makes them proper two-night trips rather than day outings. All of them reward an early Saturday start.
3. Ooty and Coonoor
The Nilgiris remain the most popular weekend destination from this part of Tamil Nadu, and Coonoor is the quieter half of the pair. The botanical garden, the tea estates, the toy train and the viewpoints around Dolphin’s Nose fill two days comfortably. In April, May and during the December season, book your stay well in advance and expect slow traffic on the ghat road — leaving very early is the single best decision you can make.
4. Kodaikanal
Greener and usually calmer than Ooty, with a walkable centre around the lake and some genuinely good short walks — Coaker’s Walk, Pillar Rocks, and the quieter stretches beyond Bryant Park. Mist is part of the experience rather than a disappointment, though it does mean viewpoints are a lottery. Two nights is the right length; anything less and most of it is the drive.
5. Mysuru
A change of pace from the hills, and an easy one with elders or young children because so little of it involves walking uphill. The palace lit up in the evening, Chamundi Hill, the market and Brindavan Gardens make a full weekend. During Dasara the city is spectacular and extremely busy in equal measure, so book early or avoid those dates deliberately.
6. Coorg (Kodagu)
Coffee estates, waterfalls and a slower rhythm than anywhere else on this list. Madikeri as a base, a homestay in an estate, a morning at Abbey Falls and an evening at Raja’s Seat is the standard weekend, and it is a good one. The drive is the longest here, so treat Coorg as a three-day break rather than a two-day one if you can.
7. Wayanad
The greenest option, and the best for anyone who actually wants to walk. Edakkal Caves, Banasura Sagar and the wildlife sanctuary give a weekend some structure, but plenty of people come simply to sit on a resort veranda and watch the rain. Roads through the forest stretches have timing restrictions, which is worth planning around rather than discovering on the day.
Making a short break actually feel restful
Leave before dawn. On every route here, an early start buys you cooler driving, empty ghat roads and half a day at the destination. The same journey begun at nine in the morning is a different and much longer trip.
Book the stay before you go. Weekend availability in Yercaud, Ooty and Kodaikanal disappears quickly in season, and arriving without a booking is how a relaxing plan becomes a stressful one.
Pick one hill, not two. Ooty and Kodaikanal in the same weekend sounds efficient and feels exhausting. Save the second one for the next trip.
Carry warm layers, even in summer. Evenings at altitude are genuinely cold, and this is the thing people most often forget in April and May.
Check the vehicle before a ghat drive. Brakes, tyres and fuel. Hill roads are not the place to discover a problem, and fuel stops are further apart than you expect.
Keep the Sunday return early. Reaching home by evening rather than midnight is what makes the difference between a break and a blur.
Best time to visit
The hills are pleasant for most of the year and genuinely lovely from October to February, when the air is clear and the evenings are cold. April and May bring comfortable weather but the largest crowds, since that is when everyone else is also escaping the heat. The monsoon months are green, quiet and atmospheric, with the trade-off that viewpoints may be lost in cloud and some forest roads are harder going. Hogenakkal is at its most impressive between August and January, when the river is full.
How long to plan
Yercaud and Hogenakkal work as a day or a single night. Ooty, Kodaikanal, Mysuru and Wayanad need two nights to be worth the drive. Coorg is best with three. If you only have one night to spare, stay close — a short trip to a near destination beats a long drive to a far one every time.
If you would rather have the stay, the vehicle and the route arranged for you, we do this every week — send us an enquiry, or browse our featured destinations for longer trips when you have more days.
